Orthopedic Mattresses

An orthopedic mattress is built for people who need firmer-than-average support — primarily back and stomach sleepers, and anyone waking with lower back pain. The support core is divided into seven zones that carry the body with varying firmness: the shoulder zone is softer so the shoulder can settle naturally, while the pelvic and lumbar zones are firmer to stop the midsection sinking. The result is a spine held in neutral alignment through the night, reducing muscular tension and pressure on the intervertebral discs. It is worth knowing that "orthopedic" does not automatically mean harder — an excessively firm mattress presses into the shoulder and hip and can make pain worse. The firmness of our models is chosen so support stays solid while pressure points are still relieved. If you have a diagnosed spinal condition, discuss mattress choice with your physiotherapist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a firmer mattress better for back pain?

Not necessarily. Research indicates a medium-firm mattress works best for lower back pain — keeping the spine straight while still relieving pressure at the shoulders and hips. A very hard mattress can increase pain by preventing the body settling into a natural position.

What does a zoned mattress mean?

A zoned mattress divides the support core into areas of differing rigidity, usually five or seven zones. The shoulder area is softer and the pelvic area firmer, so heavier parts of the body do not sink and the spine stays aligned.

Does an orthopedic mattress suit side sleepers?

Side sleepers need more give at the shoulders and hips. Our orthopedic models are zoned for exactly this, though very light sleepers may find a foam mattress more comfortable.
